âWe canât do this anymore,â sheâd said, leaning against the door and not even removing her coat that protected her from the March chill. Sheâd come to his apartment that evening to break it offâand it wasnât easy for either of them.
âWe can if we want to.â
âBrockâyouâre a brute.â
âNot to you,â he said. âIâd die before I hurt you.â
She shook her head resolutely. âYouâre paid to hurt other people. I canât stand that.â
âI hardly hurt people at all.â
âHardly? Wow, Brock, Justâwow!â
âArizona, you knew Iâve worked all my life for what people around here call the Irish mob. What did you think I was, their interior decorator?â
âI donât know what I thought!â She hugged herself. âI thought you were hot stuff when I watched everybody in Cleveland stand in long lines waiting to kiss your ass. I knew from the first minute I saw you that you were big and intimidating. Thatâs why I was attracted to you. It took me to realize people wanted to kiss your ass so you didnât beat them up, break their kneecapsâor worse!â
âAnd I was attracted to you because youâre the most beautiful woman I ever saw. I still think so. Iâll always think so.â
âStop!â she ordered, never realizing that what heâd said would turn out to be completely true. âMy coworkers whispered about you at the station when they knew we were seeing each other. Every one of them warned me that you were a dangerous man. I chose to ignore it. But there are things I canât ignore.â
âLike?â
Her eyes were frosty. âYouâve been arrested four timesâfor murder.â
âI was never charged. Never went to court. How much importance do you place on false arrests?â
âIf you never really murdered anyone,â she said, âas far as Iâm concerned, you still came too damn close.â
âWhat do you want from me, Arizona? Quit my job and be a road construction guy for the county? A bartender? A high school wrestling coach?â
âAt least,â she said, âI could trust you.â
âYou know damn well Iâve never even looked at another woman since the moment I saw you.â
âThatâs a different kind of trust. I can trust thatâbut I canât trust where you are in your life. I never could again.â
âIâll change my job,â Brock Sheehan promised, raising his hand to take the pledge. âIâll move out of Clevelandâto wherever you go. You know I adore youâI tell you that twenty times a day. Iâll never stop loving you, no matter what.â
She shivered, even though she was in his warm apartment. âIâll always love you, too, for what itâs worth.â Her eyes welled up with tears just waiting to be shed, and she turned and put her hand on his doorknob for the last time. âThatâs the shitty part of it.â
